Incident at the Canon Service Center

I have been getting this “Error 99” not long after I purchased my Canon 400D. Thinking it was only a small problem, I just brush them at a side. Fyi, “Error 99” is a general error. Whenever “Error 99” shown on the LCD screen, all I need to do is switch the power off and on again or removed the battery and slot them back again. While I was holidaying in Port Dickson, the error was so dramatic. I have to repeatedly switch them off and on for the fifth time before they could function again! A bit worrying, I asked my sifu about “Error 99”. Looks like all along, I was so wrong to take the problem lightly. He had this same problem before and had his camera repair for RM400! I cringe when someone talking about money. As my camera is still under warranty, I decided to send them back to Canon.

Now, these people in Canon sure knows how to boiled my fire (foh kwan – cantonese).

First Visit

When I bring in my Canon 400D, I checked with them if they want me to leave the 50mm lens with them cos the problem might be coming from the body or the lens. They say no need. Just the body will do. In the afternoon, they called me to send in my lens as the computer can’t find any fault in the body. They suspected the error could come from the lens. Of course I have to raise my voice, “TADI KATA TAK PAYAH LENS. SEKARANG MAU LENS. BERAPA KALI KENA JALAN NIIIIII!”

Second Visit

I bring in the lens. And this time I ask them if they want my kit lens. Adding that I rarely use my kit lens at all and the error usually occurred when I used the 50mm lens. After the Babe heard it, conveniently she said no need. So I left the Service Center with my kit lens leaving the 50mm there.

Two days later, I called them to check on the status of my lens. They said they still can’t find the fault in the body and 50mm lens. Now they suspect it could come from the kit lens. But, but, I RARELY USED MY KIT LENS AT ALL! Lazy to argue with them, I delivered my kit lens the next day. I already can’t eat and sleep without my camera so I beg Hubby to be a bit more efficient. Next day must send in!

Third Visit

Since the body and 50mm has no problem, they are ready to discharge from the ‘hospital’. And now, my kit lens that is rarely used was hospitalised. They suspect it could be the culprit. They will change the optical bla bla in it.

But HARLOW!!!!! I have never used that kit lens and the error came out only when I used the 50mm lens. How come Kit lens need to do a operation instead of the 50mm lens or the body? You get what I mean or not? Very not logic right?!

Then hor, story haven’t finish yet. I ask them now how since the error keep on coming out and they all can’t find the problem. What if (IF only! Touch wood!) after warranty period the camera decided to die on me. She say, “oh no worries” as they usually will give one week extended warranty after the service. But then, I have another 4 more months before my expiry date. What is the point you give me one week only! Get what I mean? Huh! Huh!  One week has passed and I still can’t figure out all this thing.

SO NOT LOGIC leh!

the error 99 of my babe is from the 50mm lens, cannot use any aperture smaller then F1.8. at first they also tells me the lens has no problem, but i insisted that it has, so they try it again with the setting i give to get this error 99.

oh dear, hope they can fix it. I would be firmer with Canon, if they can’t fix it, ask them for a (new) replacement!

at least don’t be like the Kambing family – left/ lost the camera somewhere/ don’t know where, buy new camera and then drop it on its lens and busted on its very first outing… OUCH!

….replaced with new camera under insurance (let’s hope this one has a relatively “safe” life, eh?)

Hehe… everyone started to worry edi. All service centres are like that, they suck. Just be firmer with them, and if the problem does occur again, you need to really boil up and scold them, if not they tarak takut. My office there, when people threaten to write complain letter, everyone shakes… so I guess writing a complaint letter also works if nothing else does. But you must know who to attention it to la..

You are wrong ler, Electronic parts are not 100%, even if you less use or use often it will still faulty…My current job is doing warranty for HP…Customer tell me i rarely use up my PC but why will got problem??? All i can tell customer that even u buy sony, toshiba, acer, dell, ibm and etc..etc… also will have problem…If anyone can gurantee electronic parts 100% won’t faulty <=== i cut my ball…

Example: Try to buy a new car and put it there for 3 to 4 years without touchin it, it will also have problem….

But agree with you about the canon people, they sounds stupid like u mention…

The Queen says: tsk, tsk, what are you toking? I have been using the body & 50mm lens most of the time. And the problem came from either one of them. Instead of repairing either the body or 50mm lens, they went and repair my kit lens which I hardly even use. So what is the point? Can understand or not? Of course I know what you mean by the electronic and car parts. No need to talk about car la. Look at our Proton car. After 2 weeks also can rosak.

i understand is just that electronic parts anything also can cause the error…some customer complaint that computer no display or keep auto-restart but eventually is the keyboard problem instead of the computer hardware…so electronic parts hard to said de,even i know that u confirm is not your kit lens problem….just tryin to said that anything beyond our imagine can happen in electronic parts….By the way the canon people who serve u either is new people with no experience or maybe he purely stupid …….I talk about car is just to make a sample….electronic parts are almost similar to battery…you never use the battery also will flat….Just tryin to make sense~

Like today got 1 customer out of warranty but 1 discount for the repair charges….swt sial…check my msn nick….

By the way good luck to your camera

The Queen says: Got other example or not? Your example tak boleh pakai wan cos camera and computer is two irrelevant thing. Now I got a body and two lenses. Let’s call them A & B. Problem occured only when I used body and lens A. When bring in to check, they tell me body and lens A cannot detect problem. (not human error, the computer cannot detect the problem!) Now they say lens B got problem which I never used before. You see that???!!! Huh! Huh! I don’t care if they fixed lens B, but I farking want the body and lens A to be fixed also. Get what I mean now???? I’m talking about camera la.

Allan… you do not make any sense at all. In fact, you are making people even more confuse. Pls stick back to your HP stuff and refrain from trying to make people think you know more than you actually do.

Seems like Canon is not a reliable camera, and their service center is even more sucks! Their approach in trouble-shooting the problem is not logical at all. I would demand for a replacement of a NEW set if this persists. Good luck! (I hope my Nikon doesn’t crash on me *pray*.)
